More than 1 million travelers every year come down with diarrhea that commonly lasts from one to four days. Travelers diarrhea is caused by bacteria that is new to your stomach, but harmless for the local population.

If you are traveling, take these steps to avoid illness:

Do not drink the local water.
Boil, peel or cook everything.
Avoid raw vegetables.
Brush your teeth with bottled water.
Do not use ice cubes.

Avoid coffee and tea unless you know it has been made with boiled water. Drink your coffee black. Order your meat well-done.Pack drinking straws and use them to avoid contamination from bottle rims.

Cipro and Bactrim are useful for thwarting and halting diarrhea. Pepto-Bismol and Immodium will fight symptoms.
If your diarrhea is accompanied by a high fever or blood in your stool, see a doctor immediately.
