Pharmaceutical companies may spend less than 1% of their advertising budgets on the Internet, but their influence over content on the Internet goes far beyond what this statistic suggests. Every major commercial health web site expects that 80% of its revenue will ultimately come from the pharmaceutical industry. This revenue source may be advertising, sponsorships, or educational grants. Even many non-commercial sites such as those run by patients, associations and non-profit organizations get revenue in one form or another from partnerships with pharmaceutical companies.
